Water microbiology is concerned with the microorganisms that live in water, or can be transported from one habitat to another by water. Water can support the growth of many types of microorganisms. This can be advantageous. However, the presence of other disease causing microbes in water is unhealthy and even life threatening.

Waterborne pathogens are a leading cause of diseases and death worldwide. Routine microbiological testing of drinking water supplies is essential for protection of public health. Pathogenic microorganisms can cause intestinal infections, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid fever, cholera and other illnesses. Bacterial contamination cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste. The only way to determine if a water supply is contaminated by bacteria is based on the detection of indicators of faecal contamination.
